R-POD Travel Trailers: Which One Is Right For You?
The R-POD is a line of lightweight, expandable, hybrid travel trailers manufactured by Forest River RV. It is available in 10 different floor plans with a length ranging from 18 feet and 4 inches to 20 feet.
In this article, we take a look at the R-POD, its list of features, and why this lightweight, small travel trailer might be right or in some cases, wrong for you.
The R-POD is manufactured by Forest River RV which is now owned by Berkshire Hathaway. It is a small travel trailer with a unique styling, bold graphics, and an expandable side.
Take a look at the photo below of the R-POD and you’ll notice a small travel trailer with classic styling.
In the photo above, you can also see the expandable tent locate on the rear end. This tent is available in the RP-176T, which is one of the 10 floor plans available. The smallest of the R-POD floor plans is the RP-171 that has the following exterior dimensions: length of 18 feet and 4 inches, exterior width of 6 feet and 5 inches, the slide-out increases width to 8 feet, exterior height of 8 feet and 7 inches, while the AC unit on the roof makes the exterior height 9 feet and 6 inches.
The largest R-POD floor plan is the RP-183G. The “G” in the model number means it has an outdoor garage, which we’ll talk about a little later in this article. The RP-183G has the following exterior dimensions: 20 feet in length, the exterior width is 6 feet and 5 inches. When the slide-out is extended, the maximum exterior width increases to a total of 5 feet. The exterior height is 8 feet and 8 inches and with the addition of the A/C unit, it increases the maximum exterior height to 9 feet and 6 inches.
Features of the R-POD Travel Trailer
When it comes to features on an expandable hybrid travel trailer such as this one, you’ll find many. Here is a partial list of the features:
- Aluminum Wheels
- Torsion Axle
- Self Adjusting Brakes
- Diamond Plate to protect the front of the trailer
- LED Lights
- A Spoiler plus a One-Piece Fiberglass Roof.
- Spare Tire
- Fantastic Fan
- Automatic Flip Foot
The standard appliances in the R-POD include a 3-way refrigerator, two-burner stove, 20,000 BTU furnace, 12-volt water pump, and a 55amp converter with charger. As far as ventilation, you get a 3-speed Fantastic Fan and the R-POD is AC ready.
The interior comes with standard features including but not limited to: wet bath with integrated toilet, solid lumber core cabinets, hardwood drawer fronts, decorative window treatments, mini blinds on some models, AM/FM/CD/DV player, and Bluetooth on some models.
The interior comes in 3 available color schemes. There is Seaglass, Slate, and Latte. All three interior color schemes are earth tones with the secondary color having complementary color to the main design color. Overall, I like the way the interior is designed.
Available Options on the R-POD by Forest River
The R-POD line of travel trailers come with options you purchase:
- 135 BTU low profile A/C. The R-POD does not come with an A/C unit, it only comes equipped with a fan as standard equipment.
- You can purchase a convection oven
- An optional 19-inch LCD flat screen can be purchased. It comes standard on the RP182G and 183G.
- R-Dome awning with screen room adds additional covered space just outside the travel trailer
- Bike carrier for 2 bikes
Another interesting option is the Hood River Edition which raised the axle and adds 15-inch off-road tires. However, it is only available as a west coast production.
The R-POD Tent
One model of the R-POD, the RP-176T, has an expandable rear end. The tent adds additional living space in the form of a 60 inches by 74 inches bed. The tent is made from Aqualon vinyl which is a durable and breathable material that is designed to ream flexible in all types of climates. It is also mildew-proof.
The R-POD Rear Garage
Let’s talk about my favorite feature of the R-POD travel trailer; the garage. The garage is a full-width hatch that is located at the rear of the R-POD. It’s basically an outdoor entertainment and/or storage center. The garage model comes with:
- a 19-inch flat panel television
- two marine grade speakers
- a free-standing gas grill
The garage models all come equipped with a Versa-Trac sliding storage system that has removable baskets and hooks. You will also find cargo storage nets and adjustable hanging pocket organizers. There is also a built-in sink with a 15-foot detachable sprayer hose. The R-POD garage is an excellent feature on a small trailer such as this one. It does help you enjoy the outdoors a lot more.

This video shows some of the changes coming to the R-POD 2017 models.
So is the Forest River R-POD the right travel trailer for you? If you are looking for a quality travel trailer that sleeps one or two people comfortably, can easily be towed with a small truck or SUV, and looks great inside and out, then the R-POD might be the perfect travel trailer for you. It costs somewhat more than a typical travel trailer this size, but we think it is well worth the price.
However, if you are looking for more room with bigger sleeping capacity and more standard sized appliances and furniture, and you also have a bigger truck to tow a bigger trailer, then the R-POD is probably too small for you.
Write any comments or questions on the R-POD below. I’d love to hear from you and what you think of the R-POD.
