The R-POD is a line of lightweight, expandable, hybrid travel trailers manufactured by Forest River RV. It is available in 10 different floor plans with a length ranging from 18 feet 4 inches to 20 feet. In this article, we take a look at the R-POD, it’s list of features and why this lightweight, small travel trailer might be right or in some cases wrong for you.
The R-POD is manufactured by Forest River RV which is now owned by Berkshire Hathaway. It is a small travel trailer with a unique styling, bold graphics, and an expandable side. Take a look at the photo below of the R-POD and you’ll notice a small travel trailer with classic styling.
In the photo above you can also see the expandable tent locate on the rear end. This tent is available in the RP-176T which is one of the 10 floorplans available. The smallest of the R-POd floorplans is the RP-171 that has the following exterior dimensions: length of 18 feet 4 inches, exterior width of 6 feet 5 inches, the slideout increases width to 8 feet, exterior height of 8 feet 7 inches, while the AC unit on the roof makes the exterior height 9 feet 6 inches.
The largest R-POD floorplan is the RP-183G. The “G” in the model number means it has an outdoor garage which we’ll talk about a little later in this article. The RP-183G has the following exterior dimensions: 20 feet in length, the exterior width is 6 feet 5 inches. When the slideout is extended the maximum exterior width increases to a total of 5 feet. The exterior height is 8 feet 8 inches and with the addition of the A/C unit it increases the maximum exterior height to 9 feet 6 inches.

The R-POD Tent
One model of the R-POD the RP-176T has an expandable rear end. The tent adds additional living space in the form of a 60×74 inch bed. The tent is made from Aqualon vinyl which is a durable and breathable material that is designed to ream flexible and all types of climates. It is also mildew-proof.
The R-POD Rear Garage
Let talk about my favorite feature of the R-POD travel trailer, the garage. The garage is a full-width hatch the is located at the rear of the R-POD. It’s basically an outdoor entertainment/storage center. The garage model comes with:
- a 19-inch flat panel television
- two marine grade speakers
- a free standing gas grill
The garage models all come equipped with a Versa-Trac sliding storage system that has removable baskets and hooks. You will also find cargo storage nets and adjustable hanging pocket organizers. There is also a built-in sink with a 15-foot detachable sprayer hose. The R-POD garage is an excellent feature on a small trailer such as this one. It does help you enjoy the outdoors a lot more.
The R-PODs range in price from $17,000 on the low end to around $22,000 on the high end for the models that include the garage. Used prices on the R-POD hover around $10,00 to $15,000 for models several years old. Be prepared to pay a premium price for a used model. The R-POD tend to hold their value rather well.

This video shows some of the changes coming to the R-POD 2017 models.
So is the Forest River R-POd the right travel trailer for you? If you are looking for a quality travel trailer that sleeps one or tow people comfortably, can easily be towed with a small truck or SUV, looks great inside and out than the R-POD might be the perfect travel trailer for you. It costs somewhat more than a typical travel trailer this size but we think it is well worth the price.
If however, you are looking for more room, bigger sleeping capacity, more standard sized appliances, and furniture, have a bigger truck to tow a bigger trailer than the R-POD is probably too small for you.
Write any comments or questions on the R-PODs below. I’d love to hear from you and what you think of the R-PODs.
